Early Voting Opens On October 16

October 15, 2020

Here’s How to Vote:

If you registered to vote by mail, in person, or online, the time to cast your ballot is coming. Voters in Louisiana have the options of early voting, mail-in voting (for certain residents), and in-person voting on election day.

At Anderson Traylor Edwards, we want to make sure you understand how to vote – no matter which method you choose.

Early Voting: October 16 to October 27

All Louisiana voters can vote early for the presidential general and open congressional primary election from October 16 through October 27 (excluding Sunday, Oct. 18 and Sunday, Oct. 25). The Registrar of Voters Office of each parish will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., and many parishes have additional early voting locations.

Some locations may have limited dates and times, so before heading out to vote, call your nearest early voting location and confirm their hours and days of availability.

Make sure to bring a driver’s license, Louisiana Special ID, U.S. military identification card, or another accepted form of identification along to your polling place. You should also bring hand sanitizer and a cloth face covering to protect yourself from COVID-19. Masks are required in some parishes.

Voting By Mail

Some Louisiana residents may apply for an absentee ballot and vote by mail. You can request an absentee ballot if you:

  • Are 65 or older
  • Live in a nursing home
  • Have a disability
  • Are hospitalized or incarcerated
  • Are traveling outside your parish on Election Day
  • Meet other special requirements

The Louisiana Secretary of State has all the information you need about absentee voting or voting by mail. The state must receive your request for an absentee ballot by Friday, October 30, and receive your completed ballot by Monday, November 2, 2020, by 4:30 p.m. You may also return your ballot in-person by the same deadline.

Voting on Election Day

All you need for voting on election day is a polling place and your photo ID. Polls open at 6 a.m. and as long as you are in line by 8 p.m. on election day, you will be allowed to vote.

Visit the Louisiana voter portal or use the GeauxVote Mobile app to find out where you need to go on Election Day.

Note: Although Louisiana does not allow Election Day registration, you can vote even if you forgot your ID. As long as you are registered, you can vote if you fill out an affidavit to confirm your identity.

Vote With Safety in Mind

Early voting was extended this year to reduce lines and make voting safer for everyone. Consider voting early at a time that is convenient for you, and if you are at increased risk for severe illness, you may want to apply for an absentee ballot.

Only you know what is best for you. We encourage you to prioritize your safety and exercise your right to vote in whatever way you feel is most appropriate.
